Lion Kills Tiger at the Ju Zoo

{Dec 19, 2008}

At about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, after a zookeeper cleverly threw a chicken between them, a lion jumped into a dividing trench to get it, and a tiger went in too. The lion was fittest. They normally wouldn't fight, but it was either the chicken or an issue of territory. Now the lion is confined to a cage. (For killing? Isn't that what lions do?) The zoo will donate tiger cadavre to Chonbuk National University.

Jeonju's Newest Big-box

{Nov 30, 2008}

Lotte Mart just opened up in Hyojadong (that rapidly developing new area of west Jeonju, between Jeonju University and the Jeollabukdo Provincial buildings). It is the Ju's biggest, boasting three floors of marketing-engineered consumerism. Small business owners are complaining that all that money is going to Seoul, further depressing the local economy. Others are happy with the many foreign products, not to mention the one-stop shopping, reducing exposure to Jeonju's terrible drivers. Here is a MAP with taxi instructions.

Korean Students in Canada
Decry Jeolla Agency

{Nov 18, 2008}

A Jeollabukdo agency placed over 600 university students in Canadian schools, but the students are saying that they were misinformed an improperly prepared. They had to study a bunch of curriculum that was of no help to them when they got to Canada and had their eyes opened. The government footed part of the bill at about (US)$10,000, while the families put up about $16,000--per student! The students, now in Canada, are saying the agency abused their trust and that of the province, and the money and prep-study turned out to be an irrelevant waste.

The internet may eventually be the undoing of corrupt academies in Korea. Ebay sellers are rated, why not ESL franchises? It is illegal to publish the name of an academy (or university) which mistreats employees in Korea. But this site offers anonymous venting grounds for disgruntled ESL instructors. Under close scrutiny (5min ago), the website revealed that overall, people appear either to be happy with their jobs since 2007, or unaware of the site. See for yourself.

Jewelry Store Heist

{Nov 3, 2008}

The Hana Jewelry Store in SamChonDong was emptied of about $40,000(US) worth of gold and jewels last night. The thieves clipped locks and performed a brazen smash and grab, cleaning the place right out. The owner reported that he is insured for his losses, but not the damage to his store. With the price of gold climbing very high right now, other gold shops might do well to beef up security.

Nursing Home Neglect

{Oct 28, 2008}

Jeollabukdo released a stunning report this week: of 118 nursing homes in the province, only 21 are worthy to be deemed 'humane.' Topping the list were lack of ventillation and air-conditioning, inadequate emergency care, failed fire and safety building inspections. No course of action has yet been outlined to assist Jeonbuk's deeply venerated elderly.

Jeonju Skyline Limited

{Oct 7, 2008}

Buildings in Jeonju are going to be limited to 9 floors. The 'egg-crates' that dominate the skyline are often 15 floors or higher. This is much too high a population density to be ecologically sound. Jeonju's efforts to 'green up' start at the top.
