'Express' Canadian Criminal Records Check

June 2011: I was in a rush to renew my Korean E-2 visa, so Jeonju Immigration suggested I use an online service to get my criminal records check. I used CSI Screeningwhich offers a variety of options for background checks.

The Process: Scan and email them two different IDs, one that must have a photo. The check is based soley on the IDs, hence it doesn't require fingerprints.* Cost for a certified check is $45.00 CDN plus tax.

It takes two business days for processing, then they will email an electronic copy to you and / or your (prospective) employer. For immigration purposes, we need to have a paper copy, which they can mail. They can send it through regular mail, which can take a few weeks. Or you can upgrade to courier, which cost approximately $75.00 CDN, but, it will arrive within one business week.

Keep in mind, doing a records check conventionally through the RCMP is quite time-consuming: "Processing takes a minimum 150 days[!] due to current workload volumes."(source).

*Important Note: The check is therefore technically not a full criminal records check from RCMP headquarters due to the lack of fingerprints, which it states on the final document. The Canadian Embassy warned me that immigration may not accept it, BUT it was accepted by Jeonju Immigration because they specifically allowed me to use this service.

This process worked for me, but should you choose to try this, I highly recommend you have your (prospective) employer call Immigration to get their explicit permission first. It helps to explain the RCMP processing time.
