A River Runs Through It

{Sept 29, 2008}

Introducing the NoSong River. This Jeonju river was buried under concrete and asphalt for the last 40 years. Planners have a water-pouring ceremony to kick off this [inexplicable] river restoration effort that will stretch 1km in the downtown area. Bearing an apt name, Jeonju will not resurrect this river for a song: Estimated cost: 269 Ok Man Won! (That's ab US$25million).

Too Common a Sight

{Sept 21, 2008}

(In keeping with our road carnage theme) This elderly couple were broadsided by a clueless driver. Those little white outlines in the road are accident scene markings. Sometimes you can still see blood and glass. There are way too many of them around town. Drivers don't use their turn signals, or obey the lights.

What is needed in Jeonju is a broadcast driver-education series. Who wants to help make one? "Good morning, this is your car. Today's tip: look both ways before you drive your ton of metal into the street. Thank you and have a nice drive." [Coming soon... Hubbub]

Profile: HyoMoon Lee

{Sept 4, 2008}

Sculptor HyoMoon Lee takes spirits from dead trees, expressing human emotion, roughly and simply. A graduate of Jeonju University, he is in PhD art course at Jeonnam University. He likes the warmth of wood better than the cool calm of metals. He won the Jeolla Art Award (overall) in 2007.

Sales Looking Up

{Sept 3, 2008}

Mr. Park, a 34-year-old salesman, apparently has more than just a hobby. He was seen in a bank line-up, sneaking an upskirt photo with his camera phone. Police were called, and they investigated. They found pics of over 800 different local women on his hard drive. Most of his shots were taken in Samnye and Wanju, and at Woosuk University. The police are thoroughly examining the evidence. Trash Piles Up in Jeonju

{Sept 2, 2008}

Jeonju is frustrated that her people don't use or respect the new trash system. People put trash in the wrong containers or just throw it anywhere. The next idea is to give each home their own segmented container and hold them responsible for violations. [p.s. see "the effect of plastic bags" in the left column -dvm]

Angel of Death Tours Jeolla

{Sept 1, 2008}

Last week an Iksan man jumped in front of the KTX; a child fell out of a Samchondong apartment and died; and fatal car crashes were more frequent. This Friday, a man jumped off Gunsan's Koomgang Bridge, while in Jeonju, a 36-year-old man was found dead in his car, just having parked it by his apartment in Jeonju--with no apparent cause of death. Police are investigating. Also in Jeonju (PyongWhaDong), a 77 year-old man met his maker while outside the car, directing his 68 year-old wife how to back into a parking spot. She crushed him against a pole. On Saturday, on a highway in Wanju, a 24 tonne truck edged a bit to the right for traffic and hit a no-lights 50cc scooter driven by a 43 year-old man.

'Fishy Bread' Feature

{Aug 27, 2008}

Those yellow carts that serve Boongobbang (fish-shaped bean pastries) are going to hit Jeonju's streets again as the temperature drops this fall. As the season approaches, these industrious neighbors of mine can be heard scrubbing, loading, cleaning, and assembling well into the night. They sell carts to vendors, and provide training, service, and supplies for over 70 carts in Jeonju. Mrs.Choi and her brother and their spouses run the family business in Samchondong, accounting for about 40% of all the 'fishy-bread' sidewalk production in the city.

US Beef Death Toll: 1

{Aug 19, 2008}

The only US Beef-related death so far in Korea has been the man who lit himself on fire in June here in Jeonju. There have been no confirmed cases of even a single Korean, American, or anyone else of any nationality ever dying from getting vCJD from American beef. The only Americans to thus die had eaten British beef or Saudi Arabian beef. It's easy to make a bold claim without evidence - it's a lot tougher to look things up and consider what others have to say.

Silver or Gold?

{Aug 19, 2008}

On the 11th, two men, Mr. Chae (50), and Mr. Shin (48) were in a makoli bar in HyojaDong, Jeonju. They were arguing about Korean Olympic sharpshooter Jin Jong Oh, whether he'd won the silver or the gold. Mr. Shin would not back down, even though he is younger, so Mr. Chae attacked him with a sharp object, causing severe bodily harm to Mr. Shin. He is in stable condition in hospital with a 4 weeks recovery expected. Mr. Shin was right, Oh had held a silver medal. He won a gold medal the following morning.

Mysterious Pipe in Road

{Aug 5, 2008}

Jeonju police steered drivers clear of a very odd obstacle Sunday afternoon very near the Jeolla Provincial Building. It appeared to be a fence post that fell from an airplane and poked into the road. The little bit of dirt and tree root only add to the mystery. There were no surrounding marks or debris of any kind. When asked how it happened, police only waved me away and said something that sounded like, "not for muggles."

The Chatham-Jeonju Connection

Former Jeonju resident Steph Davidson recently returned to her hometown and wrote two articles for the Chatham Daily News in Ontario, Canada. In one article she discusses her experiences in Korea and adjusting to life back in Canada. The second is a profile of Hub editor David Van Minnen with a nice tip of the hat in the Hub's direction. Thanks Steph, and please, stay off the sidewalks!

Hatten's Homecoming

{July 31, 2008}

Doug Hatten checked out of Jesus Hospital today. After receiving assurances from some family, friends, and government, they have bought plane tickets with their credit card and will be flying back to Minnesota on Saturday. Doug expects to be admitted and receive treatment and some assistance for his family under a destitution provision. This is very relieving news for the Hattens. Since he's out of the hospital, the iPod concern seems less important right now, (rec'd donations will be refunded [by dvm] upon request) but they spent everything they had on sundry uncovered hospital fees.

JRs Saloon will host a Farewell/Pass the Hat party for the Hattens at the Friday night Rock Lottery drawing. The drawing is at midnight but we encourage everyone to come out earlier and see Doug off. The aforementioned donation recipients will still collect for the Hattens from now till Friday night at JRs. Doug and family want to send their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the good people of Jeonju.

Doug Hatten in Hospital

{July 30, 2008}

Doug Hatten (USA), is in Jesus Hospital (rm. 205). He has been diagnosed with a pervasive and life-threatening form of cancer. Doug is a teacher at Jeonbuk Foreign Language School. He doesn't make it out much, because he has two young daughters, however, you may recognize him as the bass guitar player from Unrequited's last concert, or the guitar playing dad from the Jeonju singing family.

Doug's wife Sue and their two little girls, Dylan and Jesse, are reeling from the news and could use any support you may wish to offer. While they are fortunate enough to be covered by insurance, their financial situation isn't strong: they had just returned from an expensive trip home (Doug's dad just passed away). At this time, their immediate needs are: your prayers, cards, visits, and cash donations.

Ironically, Doug's iPod just quit. He is in a room full of Korean people, and has no form of audio/video distraction. (The TV is controlled by the senior Korean in the room, and the other sounds in the room are mostly moans, making reading difficult, and sleep almost impossible) If the people of Jeonju could chip in to provide Doug with a new iPod, we can hopefully give him some relief to him during this dark time.

"Doug's iPod" donations will be accepted by David VanMinnen, Jeremy Monroe, Dave VanBreda, or JRs Saloon. Other forms of help to Doug or Sue or the girls would be gratefully received directly or through the Jeonju Hub.

Deadly Intent

{July 11, 2008}

A Jeonju teen (and a few friends) tricked a much younger elementary school to let him in the house. Once inside, they looted the house, (only finding W350,000 in cash.) They locked the boy and his little brother in a closet using coathangers. Then they torched the house! Thankfully, the two boys were able to kick through the closet doors and make it out to safety.

Jeonju Ready for Rioting

{July 3, 2008}

More than six buses of riot-gear clad police surrounded a demonstration which took place last night in Jeonju. (between Gaeksa and HomEver). There was a small fire and a lot of shouting, but thankfully no violence of the same intensity as is happening in Seoul. US beef was not mentioned. Rain dampened the zeal of the activists at about 10:30pm. As the police were packing up, a baton fell out of a riot bus. Hub staff witnessed a protester politely handing the baton back to the police before returning to his fisting gestures and shouting for the destruction of President Lee.
