{Feb 27, 2008}

In a survey of 1208 Chonbuk elementary, middle, and high school's teachers, only 44% say they're able to teach in English for more than an hour a week. While the new government is promoting the new program to teach English classes in English in order to develop public education, it turned out that nearly half of Chonbuk's English teachers have a problem with teaching in English.

Music Bank Bans Unchaperoned Foreigners

{Jan 30, 2008}

Music Bank

This note was handed to a customer entering Music Bank, a dance club in the Jeonbuk University area. One can only speculate on what occurred to inspire this broad-brushing, reactionary policy.

Chester Needham in Hospital

{Jan 28, 2008}

Chester Needham (Minnesota, Jeonbuk Foreign Language School, guitarist: Big in Jeonju) is recovering from disk replacement surgery in Jesus Hospital. The surgery was successful and his wife and two daughters are by his side whenever possible. The injury was sustained in China while on vacation and the school's initial response was that their insurance does not cover the very expensive surgery. Hopefully, the school's celebrity owner Robert Holly, will learn of their situation and find some way to help this family. Chester is in room 711, and visiting hours are not restricted.

Fishmongers Fume

{Jan 22, 2008}

Samsung has not offered a a single word of verbal apology for the oil spill that coated Korea's west coast. Further, the company says that allocating the compensation funds is too complicated, as the spill affected different people in different ways. So, as of yet, there is no money coming. Coastal seafood restaurants had a "now clean" festival, but hardly anyone came. As a result, a lot of fish houses are floundering, and furious at Samsung.

Fine Dining in Jeonju

{Jan 20, 2008}

Hanjeoungsik cuisine accompanied by live Korean traditional music will served up for a modest W800,000 for dinner for four. More economical courses will also be offered, ranging from W400,000 - 200,000. We'll have to be patient, location selection and construction planning is just in the beginning stages. (Should be about two weeks, then. Anyone wanna make birthday party reservations?)

Presidential Committee Gets Behind Saemangeum

{Jan 20, 2008}

The environmentally quagmired and red-tape entangled Saemangeum project is getting a push from the new president. Jeollabukdo needs this would-be major Yellow Sea logistics hub to breathe life into the province. (This region has suffered about a millenium with the stigma as Korea's economically depressed hillbilly zone. Dam it! It's time for a change!)

Gunsan Police Officer Brings the House Down

{Jan 20, 2008}

On January 16, at 2:30 a.m., off-duty officer Han (41) was drunk beyond reason and was arguing with the owner, Mrs. Choi (43) of a noribang (singing room) in Gyungwondong, Jeonju. To win the debate, Officer Han lit about a cup of paint thinner and tossed it into the establishment. As a result of the fire, Mrs. Choi suffers 2nd degree burns over most of her body and (former?) Officer Han has 3rd degree burns and is responsible for about ten million won in property damage. The fire burned out in 35 minutes. Fortunately, the noribang was otherwise unoccupied at the time (or they just got the hell out of dodge).

A year ago, another policeman set fire to his girlfriend's bar in Jeonju, injuring 3 people. (Bad boys, bad boys, whatya gonna do?)
