In an effort to curb other places from selling "Jeonju Hanji," Jeonju City has applied to patent the name and production method for Jeonju Hanji paper. If awarded, this patent will secure intellectual property rights, advertising, and signage. Perhaps soon we will be encouraged to buy only paper with the Genuine Hanji Advantage or it won't work right. Such a patent would certainly be worth the paper it's written on.

Dr. Jim Crane tells of his father Paul S. Crane: A Jeonju Hero

{May 17, 2008}

Dr. Paul S.Crane served Jeonju from 1947 to 1969. He was instrumental in the rise and success of Jesus Hospital, a leader in eradicating parasites from the Korean population, and performed hundreds of reconstructive leprosy surgeries. He served as a translator for President Kennedy once and Johnson twice. He served in Korea as the chief of surgery at the 121st Evacuation Hospital and later as the commanding officer of a real M*A*S*H unit. His son, Dr. James Crane visited Jeonju in May, 2008, with his wife and son, to revisit where he grew up. He was a guest of honor at Jesus Hospital, where he gave an interview about his father, a pillar of Jeonju's - and Korea's history.

Update on James Molem

{May 6, 2008}

During our visit last Saturday, James mentioned his surprise and gratitude that people should be concerned with his issue. He is kept in solitary confinement for his safety, and is being treated fairly. He has no books, shaver, cigarettes, or coffee. Any of these can be left for him at the jail. Any visitors would be received with appreciation. To visit the jail, you will need about an hour of free time and an i.d. card or passport. You will be directed up some stairs, to a building in which you will approach the first desk (far left) to get a visit number (and submit any packages). It takes about 30 min to see your number on the screen, when you will go to a visiting booth as directed.

Avian Influenza Besieges Jeolla Province

{April 22, 2008}

Have you found the poultry places a little roomy lately? On April 1, no joke, H5N1 Avian Influenza strain was discovered in Gimje, just south of Jeonju. Since then, it has spread all over Jeollabukdo and beyond. Authorities believe it was facilitated last week when "a duck farm, located 1.7 km from an infected premise in Gimje, secretly sold birds to a dealer, who then drove his truck through quarantine checkpoints to sell them to restaurants in six cities including Jeonju, Jeongeup, Buan and Iksan. Some of the ducks sold to a restaurant in Gimje has tested positive for avian influenza." This is a devastating blow to local poultry farmers. Look, the seafood has no more oil in it, and the pigs and cows are still groovy. Support this sucker-punched economy: Eat a locally-reared carbon-based lifeform today.
